Holly is attributed to Christmas because of the Roman holiday of Saturnalia.  As a symbol of the king who rules from the autumn to spring equinox, it is an appropriate decoration for the darkest time of the year.

Medicinally holly has favorable attributes as well, though modern remedies are safer, being able to better monitor precise amounts of this potentially poisonous plant.  Not only are correct amounts of the leaves a diuretic, but infusions of the dried bark properly prepared makes a natural tranquilizer and can lower a fever.  The magical properties of this plant are even more interesting.

The Druids used holly to give shelter to spirits and fairies against the cold.  Planted near a home, this fire flower protects from lightening and witchcraft.  As part of the seasonal mysteries it represents death and rebirth, lending itself to dream magic.  Wands of this white wood elicit control of spiritual entities.
