It wsn't the first time the Assembly had gathered to watch the Christmas assignments come to fruition.  It was the first time every member of the host was in attendance.  Even the other angels who had Christmas assignments made it a point to finish early so they could be here.  God looked at the strained faces around her.  Every seat was filled.  All but 3.  God sadly looked at Hecate's seat.  That chair would never be filled agian.  She looked at the other two chairs.  There was still hope.  It was 15 minutes to midnight.

There was a gasp from the Assembly.  God looked into the Pool of Sight which she had enlarged for this occasion.  Yes.  She had expectd this.  Kris was outside the man's apartment.  It was painful for all the angels to watch their human friend die a mortal death.  God looked away.  Here and there she met the eye of an angel waiting for her to show her wrath.  The closer Kris got to the door the more angels turned to her.

"I can't take this!" Shiva shouted.  A whisper rose from the host.  "Why aren't you doing anything?" she asked god.

"What would you have me do?" god asked quietly.

"You said anyone who helped her would be punished!"

"You wish him to be punished?  You don't think dieing and earthly death is punishment enough?"

"That's not what I mean!  You've never gone back on your word!  Everything will be changed if you don't punish him," Shiva shook her head in wonder.  "Where will we all be?" she worried.

"Is there anyone who has seen the Santa help Venus?" god asked the Assembly.  Slowly the murmur rose as each angel realized not only had Kris not helped Venus, but he was only fulfilling his duty by leaving a gift on Nick's door.  Where once the Heavens were filled with nervous strain, now an air of excitement began to rise.

Ten minutes to midnight.  The Santa had made it.  Tears began to fall from Heaven as the angels realized their friend had passed to the land of eternal rest.  Each tear fell in a gold snowflake that blessed the remains of their loved one until he was completely covered.  With a bow of her head the final tear was shed and god sent the gentle soul on his way.

The drama had yet to finish, and though they felt a great sadness, the angels still had one of thier own to be saved.  They watched as Nick donned the suit.  They held their breath as one when he regained his post on the couch.  Once more he rose.  Five minutes to midnight.  Would he succeed?  A great cheer rang through the hall imediately followed by the hearty laughter of The Santa.

Nick didn't move.  In mid laugh he realized he was no longer safely in the arms of his love at home.  He was standing in the middle of a great hall.  Only his eyes shifted to take in his new surroundings.  He even held his empty arms still though Venus had disapeared.  He had the faint thought that he was glad he wasn't trying to kiss her when this happened...whatever this was.

"Nicholas."  Nick turned.  He was surprised that he could look on her.  In fact, he was surprised he knew who she was.

What do you say to god when you first meet her?  "I thought you were a man."  The look on Nick's face showed how stupid he thought his comment was.  God laughed at his foolishness and Nick grinned.  He suddenly knew everything was going to be ok.
